THE NEW YEAR
The weather is stranger than ever. From the bitter winds, frosts and snow in December, we are now experiencing a lot of rain and above average temperatures. It is always difficult to know what rugs to put on the horses at night because if they have too few and the weather changes they could be too cold and if it stays mild then 2 rugs are too many and the horses are sweating in the morning – rather like us humans and our bedclothes! We have been running a few horses in January but the ground on the racecourses is mostly very soft or even heavy and the horses struggle to move on it. Those with good action simply cannot gallop at all and go up and down on the spot. However, Teddy’s Reflection ran well at Leicester on Tuesday 11th January, and finished 2nd , beaten only ˝ length. The Chase course up there is totally different to the hurdles one which gets watered in the Summer for the flat racing. It was really quite unacceptable ground! Teddy was unlucky to come up against a mare of Nicky Henderson’s who carried almost a stone less weight. Iona Days ran a nice first race over fences and jumped beautifully. He needs even better ground and probably further than 2 miles. Somersby is very well. He could run in the Victor Chandler Chase at Ascot next weekend, Saturday 22nd January, or else he may wait for the 2 ˝ mile Graduation Chase at Kempton on February 11th. Calgary Bay is going to run in the Grand National if all goes according to plan but could first contest the Great Yorkshire Chase at Doncaster on Saturday 29th January.
