We are now on our holidays at West Lockinge Farm – that is to say we are not racing anymore until the Autumn as we are not Summer Jump racing fans and don’t like risking the horses on the firmer ground. Sometimes, May is a wet month and we race on into June but this year – 2011 – there has been such a shortage of rain that the racing surfaces are, in places, like roads. Firm and rough.
It is very worrying for the farmers and horticulturists. The serious lack of rain means that the grass is not growing and the prospects of making any quantity of silage/haylage and hay for the coming winter are slim. It has always been said the “Rain in May is worth a load of hay”. Let’s pray that we get rain before the month is out.
A large number of our horses are now out to grass and enjoying their own Summer holiday in the fields. The yard is having a huge ‘spring clean’ and all the boxes are being steam cleaned, disinfected and painted. The staff are very busy.
We have some exciting new horses for next Autumn/Winter. Rock of Allen, a lovely 4 year old winning Point to Point horse was bought at the Cheltenham Sales on 13.04.11 and Isleofhopendreams was purchased at the same place on 11.05.11. He was 2nd in his one and only Point to Point. Two horses have come over from Northern Ireland. Balbriggan and Ballylifen. They too have had pleasing Point to Point experiences and we like them very much. The former, a lovely grey by King’s Theatre, already has an owner and was 4th on his only run. Ballylifen by Brian Boru will be syndicated at a later date and we really like him too. He has been 2nd in a Point to Point and is a super type with a very strong pedigree.
On June 1st, we are selling 6 horses at the Ascot Derby Sales. We may buy back a couple of them and re; syndicate them as there are some horses with decent form being sold notably, Iona Days, Gortenbuie and Teddy’s Reflection and although their owners are wanting to pass them on, we believe that they will win plenty more races. Watch this space – photographs will be shown here next week.
